SB826-40027r.jpg

This specimen was lot 40027 in Stack's Bowers Summer 2026 Global Showcase Auction (Pittsburgh, August 2026), where it sold for $7,930. The catalog description[1] noted, "Extremely Rare Dated Escudo from Toledo. SPAIN. Cob Escudo, 1596-T C. Toledo Mint. Philip II. NGC MS-61. An exceptional RARITY, this wonderful specimen displays a full, clear date, setting it apart and making it an incredible opportunity for the specialist. Though the flan is split, this is rather common for the manner of manufacture, and does not in any way interfere with its allure and overall appearance. Vibrant and lustrous, and a stunning survivor at this coveted Mint State level." Other one escudos were struck at Seville, Valladolid and Granada but all are rare. Cayón mentions a 1590 from Toledo but not this date.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.47 grams, 0.917 fine gold, this specimen 3.28 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón unlisted, cf. Fr-178 (without date); Cal-Unlisted (type 234).
