Áureo y Calicó sale 345, lot 474

This specimen was lot 474 in Áureo y Calicó sale 345 (Barcelona, March 2020), where it sold for €160 (about US$211 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"(1686-1699). Carlos II. Sevilla. (M). 8 reales. Vanos. Tipo "María". Escasa. MBC-. (kingdom of Spain, Charles II, undated eight reales of the "Maria" type, Seville mint. Scarce, about very fine.)"

This type was supposed to bear a date but, like many cobs, this example lacks a legible date because of the bad strike. Cayón notes this type for Seville for 1686 and 1690-99. We have arbitrarily assigned this to 1686. It is also underweight, which may have been intentional.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 27.07 g, 0.931 fine silver, this specimen 21,72 g.

Catalog reference: Cal-tipo 83, Cayón-7619, KM 41.2.
