Aureo y Calicó sale 448, lot 153

This specimen was lot 153 in Aureo y Calicó sale 448 (Barcelona, March 2025), where it sold for 1,700 € (about US$2,221 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "n/d (before 1582). Felipe II. Burgos. 1 ochavo (2 maravedis). Very nice. Some of its original luster. Rare in this condition. EBC [extremely fine]." This denomination was struck for Philip II at Burgos (shown here), La Coruña, Cuenca, Granada, Segovia, Toledo and Valladolid. Crudely struck, many varieties exist. This one is marked with a "B" to the left and a crescent moon to the right. Numista states that the early ones were billon, around 0.7 g, and the later ones were copper, around 4.2 g. The problem with that theory is that this example doesn't fit either.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: copper or billon, this specimen 2.79 g.

Catalog reference: Cayón-3308, AC-51.
