This specimen was part of lot 25779 in Heritage sale 3026 (Long Beach, October 2013), which sold for $199.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "South African assortment: a nice selection of mostly choice 20th-century coins, uncertified and perfect for the collector who likes to make his own grading decisions." The shilling was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1930 and 0.500 fine thereafter. This type varied from later issues (KM 17.2, struck 1926-30) by the presence of a circle of beads around the standing figure on the reverse.
Recorded mintage: 1,269,000.
Specification: 5.66 g, 0.800 fine silver, 23.6 mm diameter.
Catalog reference: KM 17.1.
