Stack's Bowers October 2021 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72227

This specimen was lot 72227 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, October 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "SOUTH AFRICA. 2-1/2 Shillings, 1924. London Mint. George V. NGC AU-53. A well struck coin with abundant remaining luster and patchy toning throughout." The 2½ shillings or half crown was struck in South Africa 1923-60. It was 0.800 fine silver until 1930 and 0.500 fine thereafter. The later issue (KM 19.2) varies from this type by having "2½ SHILLINGS" in the reverse legend.

Recorded mintage: 984,000.

Specification: 14.14 g, 0.800 fine silver, 32.3 mm diameter.
