Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt ("S.R.") in 1789

This specimen was lot 1349 in Künker sale 293 (Osnabruck, Germany, July 2017), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$6,200 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWARZBURG, SCHWARZBURG-RUDOLSTADT, GRAFSCHAFT, Friedrich Karl, 1790-1793. Konv.-Taler 1791, Saalfeld. In dieser Erhaltung von allergrößter Seltenheit. Kabinettstück von feinster Erhaltung. Erstabschlag, Stempelglanz. (Germany, county of Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt, Frederick Charles, 1790-93, convention thaler of 1791, Saalfeld mint. Of the greatest rarity in this condition, presentation piece struck on new dies, uncirculated.)"

This is the fifth of five thalers issued by this fragment of the Saxon duchies in the eighteenth century. It was accompanied by a half thaler (KM 133). The line survived until World War One.

Recorded mintage: unknown but rather scarce.
