Sincona sale 63, lot 570
Holstein in 1648

This specimen was lot 570 in Sincona sale 63 (Zürich, June 2020), where it sold for 600 CHF (about US$752 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND | Schleswig-Holstein-Schauenburg, Grafschaft, Justus Hermann, 1622-1635. Taler 1622, Altona. Mit Titel Ferdinands II. Sehr schön-vorzüglich. Patina. (Germany, county of Schleswig-Holstein-Schauenburg, Justus Hermann, 1622-1635, thaler of 1622, Altona mint, in the name of Ferdinand II. Very fine-extremely fine, Nicely toned.)"

The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. This type was struck 1622-23, before the local dynasty lapsed in 1640. Pinneberg lies between Gluckstadt and Altona on the Elbe river.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 28-29 g, 43 mm diameter, this specimen 28.96 g.

Catalog reference: KM 134, Lange 948. Weinm. 330, Dav-3749.
