Holstein in 1648

This specimen was lot 11571 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. 1/21 Taler, ND (1621). Schaumburg-Holstein-Pinneberg. Ernst III. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." Schaumburg proper is adjacent to Lippe in lower Saxony. The county of Schaumburg-Pinneberg is on the north bank of the Elbe, between Hamburg and Gluckstadt. Erected in the fourteenth century, the line fell extinct in 1640 and the county was annexed by the king of Denmark as duke of Holstein. This and the similar KM 116, also struck in 1621, are the only issues of this odd denomination from this state. The two types vary in the reverse legend.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: silver, 26-28 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-117; Weinmeister-231; Bruun-14929.
