Künker Auction 441, lot 4593

This specimen was lot 4593 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,300 (about US$1,789 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHLESWIG-HOLSTEIN-SCHAUENBURG, GRAFSCHAFT Ernst III., 1601-1622. Reichstaler 1615, Altona. Variante mit der Jahreszahl unten zu den Seiten des Wappens. RR Vorzüglich. (county of Schleswig-Holstein-Schauenburg, Ernest III, 1601-22, thaler of 1615, Altona mint. Very rare, extremely fine.)"

The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. This thaler struck 1615-19 in many varieties; along with Dav-3737 before the local dynasty lapsed in 1640. Pinneberg lies between Glückstadt and Altona on the Elbe river.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28,61 g

Catalog reference: KM 74, Dav-3738; Lange 855; Weinm. 130.
