Holstein in 1648

This specimen was lot 1231 in Stephen Album sale 32 (Santa Rosa, CA, September 2018), where it sold for $188. The catalog description[1] noted, "SCHAUMBURG-PINNEBERG: AR 1/16 thaler (1)615, PCGS graded MS64, ex Don Erickson Collection." The dynastic affairs of this duchy are complicated even by German standards as the dukes were related to the king of Denmark and even the czar of Russia. This 1/16 thaler (equalled two schilling) was issued 1616-20 before the local dynasty lapsed in 1640. Pinneberg lies between Gluckstadt and Altona on the Elbe river.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, 1.5-1.8 g, 22-25 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-77.
