Schaumburg and Lippe in 1789, from Putzger's atlas

This specimen was lot 145 in Schulman auction 389 (Amsterdam, December 2025), where it sold for €850 (about US$1,198 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "German States - 1/2 Thaler 1748, Silver, WILHELM FRIEDRICH ERNST 1748-1777, SCHAUMBURG-LIPPE Bust right. Rev. helmeted arms. Ex Cherry Tree Collection. PCGS AU53." This rare one year type accompanied an even rarer thaler (KM 9/Dav-2763). The reported weight gives us pause, as it is correct for a thaler, but the drapery of the helmets matches that of the half thalers depicted in the SCWC and Numista. Coinage from this tiny state is sparse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 14.54 g, silver, 35 mm diameter, this specimen 27.95 g [sic].

Catalog reference: KM 7, Weinm. 36.
