Künker sale 400, lot 252
Schaumburg and Lippe in 1789, from Putzger's atlas

This specimen was lot 252 in Künker sale 400 (Berlin, February 2024), where it sold for €4,800 (about US$6,227 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHAUMBURG-LIPPE, GRAFSCHAFT, Albert Wolfgang, 1728-1748. Reichstaler 1748, Bückeburg oder Augsburg. RR Feine Patina, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, county of Schaumburg-Lippe, Albert Wolfgang, 1728-48, thaler of 1748, Bückeburg or Augsburg mint. Very rare, fine patina, extremely fine to uncirculated.)

(Count Albrecht Wolfgang came from the first marriage of his father, Count Friedrich Christian (1681-1728), to Johanna Sophie von Hohenlohe-Langenburg. He fought together with his son and successor Wilhelm Friedrich Ernst (1748-1777) in the War of the Austrian Succession on Maria Theresa's side. The two Schaumburg-Lippers made great contributions, particularly in the Battle of Dettingen on June 27, 1743. The dies for the wonderful Baroque thaler offered here were cut by the Swiss die cutter Jonas Thiébaud, who had worked at the Augsburg Mint since 1740. It is not yet clear whether this thaler was made in Augsburg or in Bückeburg with dies cut in Augsburg.)"

This issue was accompanied by a half thaler. Another thaler struck in 1748 (Dav-2763) notes the accession of his replacement, Wilhelm I Friedrich Ernst. Coinage from this tiny state is sparse.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 29.20 g.
