Schaffhausen 1657 15 kreuzer
This specimen was lot 3432 in Sincona sale 91 (Zürich, May 2024), where it sold for 80 CHF (about US$106 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SCHWEIZ Schaffhausen, Örtli 1657, Schaffhausen. Ohne Gegenstempel. Fast sehr schön. Kleine Schrötlingsfehler. (Switzerland, canton of Schaffhausen, örtli of 1657, Schaffhausen mint, without counterstamp. About very fine, Minor flan flaws.)"
This type was struck 1657-58. In other cantons, the örtli was a four batzen coin or sixteen kreuzer; here it seems to be fifteen kreuzer. Examining similar coins in the auction archives shows that most specimens are weakly struck on the eagle's breast, some show a "15" there and others a "16", which could be the result of a die break.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: billon, this specimen 5.01 g.
