Sincona sale 98, lot 4392

This specimen was lot 4392 in SINCONA Auction 98 (Zürich, May 2025), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$1,088 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SCHWEIZ Schaffhausen, Örtli 1658, Schaffhausen. Mit Gegenstempel Widderkopf. Sehr selten. Schön-sehr schön. Schrötlingsfehler. (Switzerland, canton of Schaffhausen, Örtli of 1658, Schaffhausen mint, with ram's head counterstamp. Very rare, Fine-Very Fine, Flan flaw.)"

This type was struck 1657-58. In other cantons, the örtli was a four batzen coin or sixteen kreuzer; here it seems to be fifteen kreuzer. Examining similar coins in the auction archives shows that most specimens are weakly struck on the eagle's breast, some show a "15" there and others a "16", which could be the result of a die break. This type is known with and without the counterstamp. We don't know why the counterstamp was applied.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specifications: 4.94 g, silver, 29 mm diameter, this specimen 5.29 g.

Catalog reference: KM 53 (without counterstamp), KM 55 (with counterstamp), D.T. 1379d. Zimmermann (Gegenstempel) 54, HMZ 2-766h.
