This specimen was lot 31180 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $1,860. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Friedrich August I "Mining" Taler 1827-S MS64 NGC, Dresden mint. Marbled with forest green and gold tone, this stunning specimen boasts neat, flaring fields and fantastically sharp devices, a combination that evinces a near-gem state of preservation. Ex. Heritage Auction 3014 (April 2011, Lot 24020). From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." The year 1827 is when Frederick Augustus III finally died after ruling over sixty years. Five thalers were issued in 1827:

  • arms reverse, Frederick Augustus III (Dav-861);
  • mining thaler, Frederick Augustus III (Dav-862, shown here);
  • death thaler, for Frederick Augustus III (Dav-863;
  • mining thaler for his successor Anton;
  • regular isssue for his successor Anton (Dav-865).

Recorded mintage: 18,000.
