Saxony 1772-EDC ducat Fr-2871
This specimen was lot 32058 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $3,000. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Ducat, 1772. Dresden Mint. Friedrich August III. NGC MS-62 Prooflike. Sporting an intense prooflike nature, this exceedingly attractive specimen glistens with opulent radiance emanating from the fields. Meanwhile, the strike is rather impeccable, with this example tied with just one other as the only ones seen in the NGC census for the year. An incredible opportunity for a VERY RARE type." This type was struck 1769-78. Friedrich August III did not pursue the Polish adventures of his ancestors and prosperity began to return to Saxony.
