Saxony in 1648

This specimen was lot 50452 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $352. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1763-EDC. NGC XF-45. Friedrich Christian as Elector (1763). Convention Taler. Toned." Most Saxon thalers of the period 1660-1760 are scarce. The elector Friedrich August II's attempt to conquer and rule Poland as well as Saxony impoverished both countries. This thaler was issued during Friedrich Christian's brief rule as elector; several thalers (Dav-2676, Dav-2681) are known for the year.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 28.06 g, 0.833 fine silver.

Catalog reference: Dav-2677a; KM-962; Schnee-1050.
