Sincona sale 83, lot 2623

This specimen was lot 2623 in Sincona sale 83 (Zürich, May 2023), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$1,071 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, "Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, Johann Georg II. 1656-1680. Taler 1659, Dresden. Auf den Tod seiner Mutter Magdalena Sibylla. Sehr schön-vorzüglich (on the death of the elector's mother Magdalena Sibylla, Very fine-extremely fine)." It is unusual to see a thaler with inscriptions on both sides and no pictorial element at all. Surprisingly, this issue is not listed as rare.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen is 29.12 g.

Catalog reference: Clauß/Kahnt 503, Dav-7615, KM 482.
