This specimen was lot 10348 in Ponterio sale 169 (Baltimore, November 2012), where it sold for $734. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1656. NGC XF-45. Johann Georg II (1656-80). Death of Johann Georg I. Dark tone. Demarete Collection." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type was issued 1656 only to commemorate the death of the elector. It is one of a series that included a groschen (KM 446), an eighth thaler (KM 447), quarter thaler (KM 448) and half thaler (KM 450).
