This specimen was lot 71436 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Santa Ana, CA, October 2019), where it sold for $840. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1655-CR. Dresden Mint. Johann Georg I. NGC MS-61. A pleasing overall design, this type features a rather complex coat-of-arms on the reverse with no less than eight elaborate helmets atop the shield. Handsomely toned and struck, the present specimen--quite RARE this nice--is exceeded in the NGC census by just one other example." This coin was issued by the elector of Saxony in 1638-56 and is one of the common thalers of the seventeenth century.
