Saxony 1632-HI thaler Dav-7601
This specimen was lot 31127 in Heritage sale 3105 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $2,880. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Johann Georg I Taler 1632-HI MS65 NGC, Dresden mint. A promising and well-represented Taler type seen with greater frequency in recent years in commendable Mint State designations, but rarely at the Gem level. Every feature rises in clean contrast against its surrounding elements, a clear result of a definitive strike. Of the certified population for the Davenport reference, only a single example across 20 dates bests the current offering. Ex. Privately Purchased from CNG in July 2007. From the Cape Coral Collection, Part II." Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type was issued 1620-38. It is not rare but is less common than issues of the previous reign. A double thaler (Dav-7600) also exists.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
