Stack's Bowers 2023 ANA sale, lot 55765

This specimen was lot 55765 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Pittsburgh, PA, August 2023), where it sold for $240. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. 1/2 Taler, 1605-HvR. Dresden Mint. Christian II, with Johann Georg I & August. NGC AU-58. From the Augustana Collection." This type was struck 1601-11 and is rather scarcer than preceding (KM MB318, KM MB319) and succeeding types (KM 41, KM 53). Christian II succeeded to the electorate in 1591, aged eight. Dominated by his mother, he lapsed into alcoholism and died of a heart attack, aged 27.
