Saxony 1586-HB 1/4 thaler KM-MB224
This specimen was part of lot 967 in Jean Elsen sale 165 (Brussels, June 2026), which sold for €180 (about US$248 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, August (1553-1586), lot de 2 p.: demi-Taler, 1580; quart de Taler, 1586. Traces de monture. Beau à Très Beau. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, August, 1553-86, silver half thaler of 1580 and quarter thaler of 1586. Trace of a mount mark, Fine - Very Fine.)"
This type was struck 1572-86, all with mintmaster HB. The SCWC does not list this type as rare but this is the first example we have posted. August died in February 1586, aged 59 years, and quarter thalers were issued to commemorate his death, similar to this thaler (Dav-9804).
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver.
