Stack's Bowers February 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 73334
SB223-73334r.jpg

This specimen was lot 73334 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $600. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxony. Taler, 1584-HB. August. PCGS AU-53. Delicate magenta gray rests across the surfaces, complementing delightful amber-olive, russet, and cobalt hues in the periphery. The strike is rather satisfying, and, despite some local weakness, details in the portrait and shield are well formed. Most satisfying of all is the potent original luster that emanates from protected areas, dynamically flashing when dipped under a light." This thaler, struck 1567-86, is one of the commonest thalers of the 16th century.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver.

Catalog reference: KM-MB208; Dav-9798.
