Saxony 1543 thaler Dav-9740
This specimen was lot 1388 in Stephen Album sale 27 (Santa Rosa, CA, January 2017), where it sold for $881.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "SAXE-ERNESTINE LINE: Johann Friedrich I, 1532-1547, AR thaler, Goslar, 1543. bust of Philipp der Grossmütigen ("the Magnanimous") of Hessen on the reverse, attractive VF, S, ex Hans Mondorf Collection." This thaler is noted for 1542-47 and is fairly common for the era. The two lords depicted struck this coin for their occupation of Brunswick. On Johann Friedrich's capture and imprisonment in 1547, the electoral cap was taken away from the Ernestine line and given to the Albertine line by the emperor as punishment for rebellion. Thereafter, the Thuringian state splintered into the Saxon duchies.
