The first specimen was lot 1119 in Jean Elsen sale 123 (Brussels, December 2014), where it sold for €160 (about US$233 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE, Johann Friedrich et Moritz (1542-1547), AR Taler, 1542, Annaberg. Droit: B. de l'électeur à droite, tenant une épée sur l'épaule. Revers: B. cuirassé à droite, tenant l'épée à la garde. Petite fêlure du flan et trace de monture. Très Beau. (Saxony, John Frederick and Maurice (1542-47), silver thaler of 1542, Anna berg mint. Obverse: bust of the elector to right, bearing a sword on his shoulder; reverse: armored bust to right, holding a sword. Slightly weak strike and trace of a mount, very fine.)"

The second specimen was lot 2204 in Sincona sale 23 (Zürich, May 2015), where it sold for 750 CHF (about US$942 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[2] noted,

"Sachsen, Herzogtum, ab 1547 Kurfürstentum, Johann Friedrich und Moritz, 1541-1547 Taler 1542. Annaberg. Fast sehr schön. (Germany, electorate of Saxony, John Frederick and Maurice joint rule, 1541-47, thaler of 1542, Annaberg mint. Good very fine.)"

Saxony, one of the larger divisions of Germany and blessed with numerous silver mines, issued large numbers of thalers. This type, issued by the Ernestine branch, is noted for 1542-47.

Specification: silver, the first specimen 28,74 g, the second specimen 28.85 g.
