Goldberg Sale 146, part of lot 1441
G146-1441r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1441 in Goldberg Sale 146 (Los Angeles, July 2025), where it sold for $30. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxony. Einseitiger Pfennig, ND (1497-1500). PCGS graded VF-30. The Augustana Collection." This penny has the initials "FA" above the shield, for the dukes Frederick III (r. 1485-1525) and Albert III (r. 1464-1500). The next issue of this denomination (KM MB58) has the initials "FG" above the shield, which probably are the initials of Frederick III and George (r. 1500-39). Joint coinages were frequent during the early stages of the division between the Ernestine and Albertine dukes; the Ernestine branch splintered after 1554 into the Saxon duchies.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 0.3 g, billon, 15 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: Krug-2207, probably KM MB6.
