Saxony (14)68 groschen KM-MB98
This specimen was lot 6527 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $857.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY, Sachsen (Duchy & Electorate). Ernst, with Albrecht. 1464-1486. AR Horngroschen. Friedberg mint; mm: cross. Dated 1468. Coat-of-arms surmounted by elaborately crested helmet left / Coat-of-arms surmounted by elaborately crested helmet left. Toned, minor deposits, double struck. VF. From the Robert Levinson Collection." This type is listed in the SCWC under Saxe-Wittenberg, an old splinter of the Saxon duchies which was abolished in 1500. Since most of the coinage were joint issues anyway, we present them under plain Saxony. Many varieties exist. Those noted for 1468 include:
- KM MB98: struck 1466-69 in the name of Ernst, Albrecht and Wilhelm III
- KM MB100: struck 1465-68 in the name of Ernst, Albrecht and Wilhelm III
- KM MB104: struck 1465-69 in the name of Ernst, Albrecht and Wilhelm III
- KM MB109: a mule of MB104 (obverse) and MB100 (reverse), Leipzig mint.
- KM MB110: another mule.
The SCWC states that the horngroschen was nine pfennig or 18 heller.
