CNG Triton XXIX, lot 6526

This specimen was lot 6526 in CNG Triton XXIX (New York, January 2026), where it sold for $159.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY, Sachsen (Duchy & Electorate). Ernst, with Albrecht. 1464-1486. AR Horngroschen. Liepzig mint; mm: six-pointed star. Dated 1466. Coat-of-arms surmounted by elaborately crested helmet left / Coat-of-arms surmounted by elaborately crested helmet left. Toned, deposits, scratches, marks. Near VF. From the Robert Levinson Collection." Numerous varieties of this horngroschen exist, struck at six mints with many varieties and mules. The SCWC mentions the following:

  • KM MB98: Freiberg mint, rosette mintmark, struck 1465-69;
  • KM MB99: Freiberg mint, mule of MB 98 and MB102, struck 1465 and 1467;
  • KM MB100: Colditz mint, struck 1465-69;
  • KM MB102: Freiberg mint, struck 1466;
  • KM MB103: Freiberg mint, cross mintmark, struck 1466;
  • KM MB104: Leipzig mint, star mintmark, both sides "W·D·G·DVX·SAX", struck 1466-69;
  • KM MB105: Gotha mint, rosettes in legends, struck 1466 and 1469;
  • KM MB106: Oelsnitz mint, annulets in legends, struck 1466;
  • KM MB107: Wittenberg mint, trefoil mintmark, struck 1466;
  • KM MB109: Leipzig mint, mule of MB100 and MB104, struck 1468;
  • KM MB110: Leipzig mint, mule, star/cross mintmark, struck 1468;
  • KM MB111: Leipzig mint, star mintmark, struck 1469.

The SCWC states that the horngroschen was nine pfennig or 18 heller.
