Saxe-Romhild 1690 2/3 thaler
This specimen was lot 397 in Sincona Auction 103 (Zürich, May 2026), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Römhild, Herzogtum, Heinrich III. 1680-1710. 2/3 Taler 1690, Römhild. Vorzüglich. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Römhild, Henry III, 1680-1710, two-thirds thaler of 1690, Römhild mint. Extremely Fine.)"
Saxe-Römhild was a division of the duchy of Saxe-Gotha set up for Heinrich on the death of Ernest the Pious. On his death in 1710 without heirs (his wife had nineteen miscarriages and stillbirths), his domains were divided among the four duchies--Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld, Saxe-Meiningen and Saxe-Hildburghausen--using a complicated formula that led to decades of quarrels and disputes.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver, this specimen 15.86 g.
