Künker Auction 441, lot 4510

This specimen was lot 4510 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €1,600 (about US$2,201 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-GOTHA, HERZOGTUM, AB 1672 SACHSEN-GOTHA-ALTENBURG Friedrich I. allein, 1675-1680-1691. Reichstaler 1690, Gotha. Familientaler. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, winz. Schrötlingsfehler, leichte Prägeschwäche, vorzüglich. (duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Frederick I, 1675-91, "family" thaler of 1690, Gotha mint. Attractive example with fine patina, minor planchet defects, slightly weakly struck extremely fine.)"

Ernest the Pious, duke of Saxe-Gotha, inherited Saxe-Altenburg in 1672 from its duke Frederick William III. Ernest's death in 1675 caused another reshuffle but his heir, Frederick I, managed to retain both Gotha and Altenburg and assumed the title of duke of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg in 1680. His line survived until 1825. This type, featuring Frederick's six brothers, was also struck in 1688 and 1691.
