UBS sale 85, lot 434

This specimen was lot 434 in UBS sale 85 (Zürich, September 2010), where it sold for 800 CHF (about US$913 including buyer's fee). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHLAND, Sachsen-Neu Weimar, Herzogtum, Wilhelm 1640-1662. Taler 1662. Auf seinen Tod. Säule mit Bildnismedaillon und Spruchbändern. Rv. Zwei Hände aus Wolken schnüren Pfeilbündel, darüber Krone. Kl. Zainende. Vorzüglich." (Duchy of Saxe-Neu-Weimar, thaler of 1662, on the death of William IV, 1640-62. Obverse: obelisk with mottoed ribbons; reverse: two hands hold a bundle of arrows, crown above. Extremely Fine.)

Saxe-Neu-Weimar was one of the splinter states erected during one of the many divisions of Saxony in the seventeenth century. When Saxe-Eisenach lapsed in 1741, it was added and the new polity was called Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. This one year type is rare.
