Goldberg NY International sale 58, lot 1118
GNY23-1118r.jpg

This specimen was lot 1118 in Goldberg's NY International sale 58 (New York, January 2023), where it sold for $420. The catalog description[1] noted, "German States: Saxe-Weimar. Wilhelm (1641-1662). Commemorative Quarter Taler, 1662. On the Death of Wilhelm. Pyramidal obelisk with the portrait of Wilhelm, casket between palm trees below, vital dates on scroll above. Rev. Sheaf of four arrows, crown above, hands emerging from clouds on either side to hold tying ribbon. Rare. A few old small reverse digs. Otherwise Choice Very Fine." When Saxe-Middle-Weimar lapsed in 1640, a new Saxe-Weimar was created which lasted until World War One. When Saxe-Eisenach lapsed in 1741, it was added and the new polity was called Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach. This death commemorative is fairly expensive. It is accompanied by another quarter thaler (KM 79), whose description in the SCWC is too vague to separate them (there is no photo of KM 79).

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 7.3 g.

Catalog reference: KM 80.
