Künker sale 263, lot 1284

This specimen was lot 1284 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €1,400 (about US$1,809 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-ALTENBURG, HERZOGTUM Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1639-1669. Reichstaler 1640, Coburg. R Feine Patina, sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, Frederick William II, 1639-69, thaler of 1640, Coburg mint. Scarce, nice toning, very fine.)"

Saxe-Altenburg, one of the many splinters of ducal Saxony, was formed in 1573 and lapsed several times before its final extinction after World War One.

Recorded mintage: unknown but very rare.
