This specimen was lot 704 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Altenburg. Taler, 1642. NGC AU-58. Deep blue iridescent toning. Well struck with nice details. Good eye appeal. From the Rockaway Collection." Saxe-Altenburg, one of the many splinters of ducal Saxony, was formed in 1573 and lapsed several times before its final extinction after World War One.
Recorded mintage: unknown but very scarce.
