Künker Auction 425, lot 2346

This specimen was lot 2346 in Künker Auction 425 (Osnabrück, July 2025), where it sold for €4,600 (about US$6,514 including buyers' fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"DEUTSCHE MÜNZEN UND MEDAILLEN · SACHSEN-ALTENBURG, HERZOGTUM Friedrich Wilhelm II., 1639-1669. Reichstaler 1650, Saalfeld. Selten, besonders in dieser Erhaltung. Attraktives Exemplar mit feiner Patina, winz. Kratzer, vorzüglich-Stempelglanz. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, Frederick William II, 1639-69, thaler of 1650, Saalfeld mint. Scarce in this condition, attractive example with fine patina, hairlines, extremely fine to uncirculated.)"

Saxe-Altenburg, one of the many splinters of ducal Saxony, was formed in 1573 and lapsed several times before its final extinction after World War One. This type was struck 1650-51. See also KM 424/Dav-7384, a thaler struck in 1650 for the death of Elisabeth, wife of his older brother John Philip.
