Deventer 1640 daalder Dav-4873
This specimen was lot 43761 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2019), where it sold for $576. The catalog description[1] noted, "NETHERLANDS. Deventer. Lion Daalder, 1640. NGC MS-62. From a reported mintage of only 7,000 pieces. Well struck with nearly complete legends and design features. Lustrous and very attractive." This type is noted for 1640 only, with other Deventer lion daalders known dated 1662-68, 1684-91 and 1698. It is not priced higher than contemporary German thalers (the Netherlands left the Empire in 1648) but as it normally comes wretchedly struck, a uncirculated example like that shown here is equivalent to a VF-EF thaler from Saxe-Altenburg. Klippes (Dav-A4873) also exist for this date.
Recorded mintage: 7,000.
Specification: 27.68 g, 0.750 fine silver.
Catalog reference: Dav-4873, KM-51.
