Saxe-Altenburg 1638-MR thaler Dav-7381
This specimen was lot 1683 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 700 CHF (about US$970 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"DEUTSCHLAND Sachsen-Altenburg, Herzogtum, Johann Philipp und Friedrich Wilhelm II. 1632-1639. Taler 1638, Saalfeld. Sehr schön. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, John Philip and Frederick William II, 1632-39, thaler of 1638, Saalfeld mint. Very Fine.)"
Saxe-Altenburg, one of the many splinters of ducal Saxony, was formed in 1573 and lapsed several times before its final extinction after World War One. This type of 1637-38 is scarce but not rare.
