Saxe-Altenburg 1622-WA thaler Dav-7367
This specimen was lot 4548 in Künker sale 441 (Osnabrück, March 2026), where it sold for €340 (about US$468 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"SACHSEN-ALTENBURG, HERZOGTUM Johann Philipp, Friedrich, Johann Wilhelm und Friedrich Wilhelm II., 1603-1625. Reichstaler 1622, Saalfeld. Kl. Schrötlingsfehler, sehr schön. (duchy of Saxe-Altenburg, John Philip, Frederick, John William and Frederick William II, 1603-25, thaler of 1622, Saalfeld mint. Minor planchet defects, very fine.)"
This state was created in 1602 from Saxe-Weimar for Johann II and survived until the death of Frederick William III in 1672, when it was claimed by Saxe-Gotha. This type was struck 1618-23 and is fairly common.
