CNG Triton XXVIII, lot 6360
Altenburg in 1789

This specimen was lot 6360 in CNG Triton XXVIII (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $428.75. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY, Sachsen-Altenburg (Duchy). Johann Philipp, with Fr[ie]drich, Johann Wilhelm, and Friedrich Wilhelm. 1603-1639. AR Taler. Saalfeld mint. Dated 1618 WA. Half-length busts of Johann Philipp, Freidrich, Johann Wilhelm, and Friedrich Wilhelm / Coat-of-arms surmounted by six ornately crested helmets. Toned, minor tooling on obverse, edge marks. EF." This type was struck 1613-18 and is fairly common. Another thaler of 1618, Dav-7367, showed the oldest brother on the obverse and the other three brothers on the reverse. The last of the brothers died in 1639.
