Saxe-Alt-Weimar 1595 thaler Dav-9777
This specimen was lot 3727 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $540.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "GERMANY. Saxe-Old-Weimar. Taler, 1595. Friedrich Wilhelm I with Johann III (1573-1602). NGC AU-55. Dark iridescent toning. Nice strike with good details. From the Rockaway Collection." The division of Erfurt in 1572 permanently splintered Ernestine Thuringia into fragments which were not reunited until the establishment of the Weimar Republic in 1920. This particular version of Saxe-Weimar would lapse on the duke's death in 1605. It would be revived several times before World War One wiped away all the German principalities. This thaler was struck for Friedrich Wilhelm I and Johann III 1595-97 along with a double thaler (Dav-9776).
