Künker sale 386, lot 5436

This specimen was lot 5436 in Künker sale 386 (Osnabrück, March 2023), where it sold for €750 (about US$969 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"SACHSEN-COBURG-EISENACH, HERZOGTUM, Johann Casimir und Johann Ernst, 1572-1633. Reichstaler 1595, Saalfeld. Selten in dieser Erhaltung. Sauber ausgeprägtes Exemplar mit herrlicher Patina, vorzüglich +. (duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach, John Casimir and John Ernest, 1572-1633, thaler of 1595, Saalfeld mint. Scarce in this quality, example with superb patina, choice extremely fine.)"

The duchy of Saxe-Coburg-Eisenach was one of the endless reshuffles of the Saxon duchies and likely lasted only for this set of brothers. This issue of 1587-98 could equally be filed under Saxe-Gotha and Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: silver, this specimen 28.95 g.
