Jean Elsen sale 144, lot 1522

This specimen was lot 1522 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €140 (about US$185 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ALLEMAGNE, SAXE-ALT WEIMAR, Friedrich Wilhelm et Johann (1573-1603), AR demi-Taler, 1582, Saalfeld. D/ B. cuir. de Friedrich Wilhelm de f., t. à d., vêtu d'un manteau, accosté de la date. Six écus sur le tour. R/ B. cuir. de Johann de f., t. à g., vêtu d'un manteau. Six écus sur le tour. Belle patine. Trace de bélière. Très Beau. (Germany, duchy of Saxe-Weimar, Frederick William and John, 1573-1603, silver half thaler of 1582, Saalfeld mint. Obverse: armored bust of Frederick William facing, head to right, dressed in a mantle, dividing the date, six shields around. Reverse: armored bust of John facing, left to left, dressed in a mantle, six shields around. Nice patina, trace of mounting, Very Fine.)"

The duchy of Saxe-Weimar was created and fell extinct three times. This issue is from the first creation, "Saxe-Old Weimar", and was struck 1582-85.
