Savoy (1343-83) florin Fr-1014
This specimen was lot 1001 in Jean Elsen sale 144 (Brussels, March 2020), where it sold for €28,000 (about US$36,892 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIE, SAVOIE, Comté, Amédée VI (1343-1383), AV florin d'or au type florentin. D/ + AMED- COMES Grande fleur de lis. R/ S IOHA-NNES B Saint Jean Baptiste deb. de f., bénissant et ten. un sceptre cr. Petit écu de Savoie à g. de la t. Extrêmement rare Petite craquelure du flan. Très Beau à Superbe. La première monnaie d'or de la Maison de Savoie. (Italy, county of Savoy, Amadeus VI, 1343-83, gold florin. Obverse: large lily; reverse: John the Baptist facing, giving a blessing and holding a scepter; small shield of Savoy at left. Extremely rare, small planchet defects, Very Fine - Extremely Fine. The first gold coin of Savoy.)"
The duke of Savoy was promoted to king of Sardinia in 1720 and king of Italy in 1861. All of the duchy's gold coinage prior to the late sixteenth century is very rare.
