This specimen was lot 2001 in Sincona sale 94 (Zürich, October 2024), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,663 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,
"ITALIEN Savoyen / Sardinien, Amedeo VI. 1343-1383. Parpagliola / Grosso Bianco Escuellato o. J. (1343-1383), St. Genix. Grosses gotisches A, eingefasst von vier Sternen und einem doppelten Vierpass. Mzz. Stern über Ringel. Rv. Unten zugespitztes Wappen, darüber ein fünfzackiger Stern, eingefasst von einem doppelten Dreipass. Äusserst selten. Fast sehr schön. Kleiner Schrötlingsriss und kleiner Einhieb. (Italy, county of Savoy, Amadeo VI, 1343-83, undated parpagliola or gross bianco, St. Genix mint. Obverse: large Gothic "A", cantonned with four stars in a quadrilobe; reverse: pointed shield, five pointed star above within a hexalobe. Extremely rare, About Very Fine, Small flan crack and small cut.)"
The parpagliola is obscure, but seems to have been a base silver coin worth 2 soldi and 6 denari occasionally struck in Savoy and Milan. Amadeo VI was count of Savoy when the Black Death raged thru his domain, carrying off about half of his subjects. In 1366, he went on crusade against the Turks but ended up fighting the Bulgarians instead. He died in 1383, aged 49 years.
Recorded mintage: unknown.
Specification: silver or billon, this specimen 2.71 g.
