Stack's Bowers November 2022 Collectors Choice sale, lot 75299
SB1122-75299r.jpg

This specimen was lot 75299 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "ITALY. Sardinia. 1/4 Scudo, 1770. Carlo Emanuele III. NGC EF-40. Light pewter devices contrast an ash gray backdrop, while moderate circulation can be detected across the highest points of the design. Under a light source, some faint brightness can be detected under the patina, a sign that this example is well preserved for the grade. From an issue that rarely crosses the auction block." The Duchy of Savoy was promoted to the Kingdom of Sardinia when the duke obtained that island from the Austrians in 1720. Separate coinage was struck for the island of Sardinia vs. mainland Savoy. This type was struck 1755-72. It may be distinguished from the island issue by the shape of the shield on the reverse; the mainland issue has round arms while the island issue (KM 58) has baroque arms.

Recorded mintage: unknown.

Specification: 8.79 g, 0.904 fine silver, 30 mm diameter.

Catalog reference: KM-46; MIR-948P.
