Sincona sale 76, lot 1249

This specimen was lot 1249 in Sincona sale 76 (Zürich, May 2022), where it sold for 1,200 CHF (about US$1,457 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted,

"ITALY | House of Savoy / Sardinia. Carlo Emanuele III. 1730-1773. 1/2 Scudo sardo 1770, Torino. Selten. Vorzüglich. NGC AU55. Überdurchschnittliche Erhaltung. (Italy, kingdom of Sardinia, Charles Emanuel II, 1730-73, half scudo sardo of 1770, Turin mint. Rare, Extremely fine, Extraordinary condition.)"

The Duchy of Savoy was promoted to the Kingdom of Sardinia when the duke obtained that island from the Austrians in 1720. Separate coinage, of which this issue is an example, was struck for the island of Sardinia vs. mainland Savoy. This type was struck 1768-72. It may be distinguished from the mainland issue by the shape of the shield on the reverse; the mainland issue has round arms.

Recorded mintage: 361,224 for 1768-72.

Specification: 11.79 g, 0.895 fine silver, 33 mm diameter, this specimen 11.80 g.

Catalog reference: KM 59, MIR 958 c (R2). Mont. 188 (R2).
