Sardinia 1748 lira

from Stack's Bowers May 2023 Collector's Choice sale, lot 72696

This specimen was lot 72696 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, May 2023), where it sold for $144. The catalog description^[1] noted, "ITALY. Sardinia. 20 Soldi, 1748. Carlo Emanuele III. NGC VF-35. This example displays strong details and much charm, despite some time in circulation." This type was struck 1742 and 1747-48. The SCWC reports a mintage of 2,000,000 for 1747, a most improbable figure considering the type's scarcity. It was accompanied by a mezza lira and a 2½ soldi.
