This specimen was lot 34903 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it did not sell. The catalog description[1] noted, "Italy: Sardinia. Carlo Emanuele III 1/2 Scudo 1755 MS63 NGC, Turin mint, The inaugural year of this short-lived series boasting appreciable argent surfaces retaining a Choice Mint State preservation rarely encountered. Typically witnessed in lesser conditions of circulation, the coin at hand is a conditionally challenging piece topped by only two other at NGC." This type is listed for 1755-72 and is noted as fairly reasonable. It was accompanied by a scudo (Dav-1494). The Duchy of Savoy was an Italian state wedged between France and Milan and was often the victim of invasions from both directions. In 1720, the duke acquired the island of Sardinia and promoted himself to king of Sardinia. In 1799, king Carlo Emanuele IV was evicted by Napoleon and the region converted to the Ligurian Republic then annexed to France. Sardinia did not recover her independence until 1815.
