Sardinia 1755 5 doppie Fr-1103
This specimen was lot 30380 in Heritage auction 3096 (Dallas, TX, March 2021), where it sold for $31,200. The catalog description[1] noted,
"Immense Sardinian 5 Doppie. Sardinia. Carlo Emanuele III gold 5 Doppie (Carlino) 1755 AU Details (Rim Repair) NGC, Turin mint. A massive and seldom-seen gold issue of Sardinia, overall quite pleasing in appearance, with bright, warm luster and only the faintest indications of circulation upon the high points. Slight evidence of repair work at approximately 10 o'clock on the reverse rim accounts for the grade, but the damage is quite minimal. Only the third example of this incredibly rare type we have handled, the next closest we sold, an AU55, achieved $50,400 as part of our August 2019 Platinum Night auction. Standing as one of only four total pieces certified to date by NGC, it is truly a magnificent coin, sure to enhance any collection. From the Paramount Collection."
Another stratospherically rare Italian gold coin, struck 1755-58 and 1768. It was accompanied by 2½ doppie (Fr-1104), doppia (Fr-1105) and mezza doppia (Fr-1106). Other five doppie coins are listed for Vittorio Amedeo III (1773-96) but are heavier. In other parts of Italy, a doppia was a double ducat but in Sardinia a doppie was a double scudo, hence the different weight standard.
Recorded mintage: 2,376 for 1755-58.
Specification: 48.03-48.08 g, gold, 41 mm diameter, this specimen 47.95 g.
